I'm a designer and have been for 12 years. It's largely dependent upon where you live. You make the most in New York. You'll do alright in San Francisco and Los Angeles, but of course, the rents in all three cities are so high, what you're left over with isn't much.

The above salary finders are okay. I'd also check the following, because they're in the trade:

AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Arts) has a salary finder by city.

One comment re: above responder...we have been struggling to find replacements for two designers who left months ago. We've interviewed many, but haven't been able to find good talent. This is due in part to what I believe is a strong job market for designers right now and my company's comparatively low salary range for their geographical market.

Nothing these days. Even the best have a hard time getting jobs because the market is flooded.
