The idea of a GOOD epidural is not that you are completely numb but that you do not feel the pain of your contractions.
You should still be able to feel the urge to push when the time comes and should be able to have some movement in the legs.
It should not wear off but during delivery but you should be able to feel the urge to push.

An epidural numbs you from the waist down. It usually doesn't wear off during delivery. It takes a couple hours to wear off. It is wonderful.

Like everyone else has said, it just numbs your lower body. You should still feel the sensation of the contrations, just not the pain. Relax when they put the epidural in, it might sting a little. Just breathe and concentrate. You will also be able to push your baby out with out any trouble. Pain free delivery is a wonderful thing. I've done it twice without meds, and then twice with an epidural. The epidural made the whole experience better. I was awake, happy, chatting with friends and family. Truly one of the greatest inventions of our time, and very safe.

I had an epidural with my first son (vaginal birth) and it didn't numb my whole body...about mid-abdomen down, and it numbed the pain from the contractions about 90%. I could still feel them, but they were much more tolerable. When it comes time to push, your anesthesiologist will actually lower the doseage of the medicine going into your spine so that you can feel your contractions so you'll know when it's time to push.

With my second son (c-section) I had a spinal block (one time shot into the spine) and I was 100% numb from my breastbone down to my toes. This is normal/common since a c-section is major surgery and you'll be cut open.

I am going to tell you my experience with the epidural. I LOVED it. It only numbs from about waist down and it shouldn't wear off during delivery. They gave me a little button to push if I started to feel it wearing off, I could administer more (I'm sure it had a regulator on it to keep you from using too much!)

no, just the bottom half of you.. wether or not it wears off really depends on how long your labor is, when you had your last dose, or what you and/or the doctor prefers. Thank god mine didnt, i had a 4th degree tear. you just might not want it too!
