The World Series was first played in 1903. At that time, virtually no one outside the U.S. played baseball. The team that won that series could properly call themselves the 'World Champions', since, as I stated before, baseball was not played anywhere else outside of the United States.

It was called the World Series in 1903, and the name stuck.

It's not a series between national teams of two countries, its between the champion of the National League and the champion of the American League. Both leagues are considered "Major Leagues," the best leagues.

For example, last year it was the Chicago White Sox (American League champions) against the Houston Astros (National League champions). Both of these teams are from the US. The only Canadian team, the Toronto Blue Jays, is in the American League, but they did not even make the playoffs.

They call it the World Series because in 1903 when they started playing it, no other countries had professional baseball teams. The best American teams were also the best in the world. Now some other teams, especially in Japan, might be as good, but calling it the World Series is a tradition. (In Japan they also have two leagues). The best baseball players in the world always end up playing in the American or National Leagues anyway, like American soccer players going to play in Europe.

This year, they started playing the World Baseball Classic, which was like the soccer World Cup. There were 16 countries that participated, and Japan won.

I'm not sure if a single sports fan "except me" answered your question because none of the answers i read mentioned the fact the its not two countries playing all the time. all the teams are from U.S. cities, except a couple from Canada so its only one country playing unless one of the teams from Canada make it. Its the AL vs. the NL. but its more then likely called the World Series because of the fact the the U.S. has so many people from other countries living here and playing on the teams. But who really knows. why is a driveway called a driveway when you park in it and a parkway called a park way when you dive on it. or why is jimmity the cricket called a cricket when he's a grass hopper.good luck on finding the answer but you will probably just have to make your own up lol

Because the two countries that play encompass the world of baseball. It would still be a world series if three or more played too. If it was just the U.S., it would be the National Series or something like that.

Right on the mark. I've been asking the same thing when the Americans have their base ball and they call it world series. Sometime I felt like saying, hello we are not part of the series. Why the world. Only in America.
