Simple: The IDEA that all black people are obsessed with watermellon and fried chicken is a meme. A idea thats been passed around easily and willingly by a community, and 'confermed' by annecdotal or coincidental evidence.
You could call it a sterotype that a lot of people accept or pass around, be it jokingly or seriously. I call it a regressive and destructive meme that has a high success rate of propagation.
In short: For every black person who DOES conferm to this concept, there are plenty of others who don't. This meme is probably an offshoot of a another regressive memetic construct known as 'Racism' and 'Discrimination'.

It is not an obsession, it has become apart of African-American people's customs. You see when they were slaves they got fed certain foods, like the left overs of the slave masters. The parts that were undesirable to the slave master would be fed to the slaves and animals. So things like chicken legs and thighs, pigs feet and intestines (you know chitterlings) were there meals, they had to adapt to it, for survival purposes, and now it's apart of their customs. As far as watermelon, it was grown it the fields were they had to work for early morning (5am) to night (7pm)..depending on the season... so it became apart of their customs as well. See their ancestors didn't eat these foods, because they mastered the science of agriculture. But due to the fact of being mentally and physically enslaved they were unable to produce or decide for themselves......Hopefully this answers your question and you were not offended!
Peace

*sigh* why do asses like you keep asking questions like this. For the millionth time today, everyone is different, not all black people like WATERMELON and fried chicken, and we're not obsessed with these foods. Why do people ask racist comments and then add "i'm not being racist." Obviously, since you had to add this statement, you knew you were tredding on racist grounds. DONT DENY IT (right back at cha)

*shakes head in disgust* Lord, why do you allow stupid people to procreate?! I know of plenty of people(of all races) who can throw down on chicken and watermelon(note the spelling, dearie!), and if I'm not mistaken, didn't you post something about you drinking elephant pee? You are intensely stupid and racist and you need to get a life, a grip, and change that nasty looking pic! You're a hot ghetto mess(and that transcends all racial boundaries) and you need to stop!

I think it might have something to do with what their slave ancestors ate. They ate it, so they passed it down the line and black people still like it? I don't know. All I know is that I love waddymelon (esp. with a little salt on it). Yumma!

Your asking a question based on a rumor. We are not obsessed with Watermelon or fried chicken. Just like you are not obsessed with sleeping with your sister. Its just a rumor and doesn't merit an answer.

They're obsessed? I must not be paying attention....I'll have to watch that the next time I'm in the grocery store. So should I stock up in case there's a shortage?

Its a southern thing. Its considered low class food (however I like the taste, my stomach can't handle it). Back when there was slavery, its what was made. It was all that was given to them. And so now......its mamas cooking and it taste good. Cause it reminds you of home and your mother.

First off, you is one ugly MF....
Second off, learn to spell correctly.
Third, who gives a rat's azz what they like or don't like...
Maybe you need some waddymelon to fix them grills, and some chicken would describe your legs nonetheless.
All I know is you broke every limb off the tree didn't you??
