My son is a little over 12 months old. Now, I give him a bath every other night. i used to do it in the sink, but he started standing up. So i moved to the tub, and he refuses to sit down! i try and try, and he won't. He will stand there and hold on to the shower handles! Lol... and i leave the water running, i don't fill the bath, im too nervous. .
Now, as soon as i shut the water off, he will splash around, but he still won't sit!
Does anyone have a clue about this? its just very odd, and makes for a hard time!
Thanks melissa!

how cute
he loves to stand
sometimes they can feel a little insecure with their balance in a big bath as well... but thats normal... he will slowly learn that it is safe enought to sit
he must just find the feeling absolutely fantastic
i know it must be frustrating because you just want him to sit so you can bath him and for him to stay warm...
just get a cup to keep rinsing him for now...
let him be and just watch him enjoy himself... he will soon learn to sit without feeling like he is going to slip or like he is going to get knocked over with the movement of the water...

I dunno. Kids that age are weird in the bath. My now three-year-old and my 12-month-old both went through phases where we couldn't keep them sitting. They're so busy exploring, and they're so excited about walking that they just can't sit still for a second. Especially in a place that's as fun in the bathtub.

I suppose it could have something to do with the transition from the sink to the tub, too, but I don't know: from day one, I always bathed my kids in the tub.

Do you give him some toys? A bucket or some cups might get him to sit just long enough for you to do a passable washing.

Put a good non-slip mat in the tub, turn the water off, and let him splash around. He'll get it eventually.

He could be afraid of the water running... the sound or something. It's hard to explain, but my daughter was having the same issue recently and I found that if I had her in there to watch the tub fill up and we got in together after it was filled it worked well and she stayed settled. Also, try keeping him on your lap and easing him in the water... have him kick his legs, etc. Another thing that I do to make her feel better is to let her put her toys in the tub with us instead of me throwing them all in... she gets to help like a big girl-- maybe he might respond well to it? Best of Luck!

Does he see you in the shower standing up?
I wouldn't worry about it. He's gonna have to learn how to take a shower later on anyways. Maybe you could fill the bath tub a little bit and use a detachable showerhead. It might be easier for you as you can move the showerhead around. And he might like it.

Well, my duaghter HATED being in the tub (baby tub and big tub) when she was infant, so I bathe with her. Just recently she has started wanting to stand up the whole time... I think it is so they can see and explore things around them a little better! She just started to "splash" too. Before she started standing, she would sit there politely and play. Maybe it is the fact that they are toddlers! :) Good luck!

Might be that he is afraid of slipping down into the water. I have seen videos of children who can't sit in the bath as their rear slips and they go into a laying position.

There are bath chairs for children. Try one of those.

i have 14 mo. old twin boys and they never EVER want to sit either. I try to make bath time fun with toys and such... but standing is much more fun. my sister in law tells me that it is a phase that will pass. i think that part of the reason my boys continue to stand is b/c they KNOW i don't want them too! the other day one of my boys slipped and fell... hit his poor chin and it hurt!!!! so now we are dealing with bath trauma also!!!!! ahhh. hopefully the phase will pass. bath time used to be leisurely and fun, now it is in and out baby!!!! good luck!

Kids are fickle sometimes. Give him a week or two and he will be sitting in the water again. As long as he is getting clean it will be o.k.
