Definitely..It had an influence in the lives of people who never watched it. People know the saying 'I want my MTV'. It was a major influence on the people growing up in that time. It still influences today, although I do not believe it is as big of an influence as it used to be.

Back when they actually played videos, rather than fill the airwaves with the most worthless reality tv, they were an influence.
Now MTV is basically just product placement and a mouthpiece for record companies pushing soulless music. MTV is just a giant tool.

I'm an old hippy who listens to lots of different music including alternative and current rock. I've watched something on MTV twice in those 25 years.

I used to work for MTV,in about 1986. It was still cool then, but fading fast. I went to the New Year's Party in 84/85, and then to the VMA's in 87. It was all real fun back then.

MTV SUCKS!!!! IT PROMOTES HORRIBBLE MUSIC AND NO CREATIVITY!!! IT IS GARBASH, GO LISTEN TO SOME REAL MUSIC!!!!
Not to mention they barely play music anymore, and what they do play is just hip hop. There is like one rock music video out of 20 hip hop videos.

I remember when it first aired, I couldn't get cable where I lived, so, I'd go to my grandma's in DC and tape it on VHS all night.
The first video I remember seeing was cuts like a knife by Bryan Adams
