you can't, i know that's awful but it's true, we can't change anyone in this life except ourselves. trying to change them will make them more resistive, if anything......sorry.......

You won't. My dad is in the same boat and his dad almost lost both legs to diabetes, so he knows what will happen if he doesn't take care of himself and watch what he eats. My dad has been diabetic for about 10 years now and all of the bugging from me and my 3 siblings and mother hasn't motivated him at all. Maybe your dad needs a wake up call. Maybe he needs something to happen that scares him straight. That still might not work. My dad had the moments of almost losing a big toe and after his last Dr's appointment, when both feet were purple, he apparently bought 3 pints of ice cream and a gallon of whole milk, made a PITCHER of milkshake and finished it in an afternoon. My hubby says he's got a death wish, like after the last sip, the sugary concoction of death fresh on his moustache, he says to himself "Yep, that'll do it." b/c he obviously doesn't want to live. I think he's just in a supreme case of denial. He doesn't want to believe he's sick, so he does stupid things to prove to himself that he's "normal". Like having purple feet is normal. Maybe print up a bunch of pictures from the internet of what can happen when diabetes is out of control, like amputations, etc. might motivate him, but if seeing the real thing didn't work w/ my dad, I don't know what will. Good luck :(

Unfortunately your Dad is an adult who is making no so wise decisions.
How about making him snacks that are made with non-sugar substitutes. If the recipe calls for 1 cup of sugar, use 1/4 cup of substitute.
Who does the grocery shopping in your house? Ask for more fruits and veggies. You should also watch for staches that include pasta and breads.
Go to the American Diabetes Association web site. Maybe they can help you.

Well, my mom nagged my Dad until he finally quit eating sweets.(He is a diabetic too) I could send her over because her nagging would make anyone quit. Other than that you may try some of the candies made for diabetics..its pretty good and I drink Diet Coke because I like the flavor. He needs to get accustomed to it and then it is no big deal.

Make him so good food without sugar...then once he sees it tastes ok he may be more willing to chose it over the sugary foods.

inform him on the cons of sugary foods...sugar has basically no purpose in the body and stores as bodyfat if not active on a daily basis.

Start buying him some healthy snacks. I can't eat sugar and I only keep nuts fruits and chips around. After awhile it is all he will want.
