Some very misguided opinions above, here are the FACTS!!

BOTH consoles perform the same, neither is faster!

BOTH consoles play PS1 games, the fat one has an actual PS1 built in while the slim uses software to do the work, in theory the fat one is more compatible

Slim has built in ethernet network, the fat needs an additional card

Fat can have a hard disk but very very few games support this anyway. Slim can use an external drive via the USB ports.

Slim has built in infrared for support of a DVD remote, Fat needs an additional card

Slim is more likely to burn out and fail. Fat is made using more expensive components and have a longer shelf life (my release day fat one still works)

Fat has the ultra funky sliding tray. So what if the power goes and you cant get your disk out, the powers off so you cant play anyway.

Fat has a built in power supply, just plug in the cord and your done, Slim needs an external unit.

Slim has no firewire port which is used by some games for linking consoles.

Some fat ones have optical out for audio giving superior sound.

See the link below which has a list of all models and the advantages, disadvantages of each.

Over the years the various revisions of the PS2 have mainly been to reduce costs, the original units actually lost sony money as they cost more to build than they sold for. Later models are lower in build quality due to the price cuts and this is reflected in teh number of unit failures.

if you want 2 play games online the slim one has the adapter built in so you can just plug right into the internet. If not go with the fat console because it has a cooling fan and you can play without having to let it cool off.

I like the older fat console. It has a built in fan whereas the slim doesn't. You can't play on the slim one as long in each sitting as the fat one because of this.

The slim one. Both will play all the games fine, but if you use the fat one for dvd movies, eventually the laser will stop working as well and it will have a hard time reading some games. Sony fixed that problem w/ the new one.

The only benefit I can see to getting the old ("fat") one is that you can use the hard drive, which as far as I can see is only useful for FFXI. Otherwise, I say go with the slim.

However, if you already have the fat one (like me), I don't think it's worth buying the slim one.

Slim. It plays older PS1 discs too. And if the power goes out, you can just open the lid, you don't need power to do it.

I say the slim PS2.

I would have to say the fat one, the slim one's burn out a lot faster that the fat one's do. Their fans don't work as well.

i personally think that the slim is better because it is newer smaller and has all the same functions as the fat one only it come network ready and you can use your regular dvd player controller on it.

well depends, the older one can store the HDD in the back where the slim one can't, the slim has the modem built in, the old does not and you have to buy the modem separate.
