Plans are changing all the time, so you want to research the current deals that are available. What are you going to use the phone for? Do you just want a phone in case of emergency, or are you planning on using it to keep in contact with friends?
Some carriers will allow you to use a phone that you have, some do not. Not all phones are compatible with all carriers, and they may charge you just as much to activate an old phone as they would to sell you a new one.
One point, If you only want a cell for an emergency, any phone that has ever been activated can call 911, even if there is no service currently on that phone. As long as there is a phone signal, the phone will work for 911

I would recomend buying a cheap Virgin Mobile phone. That way you aren't paying a lot and can just buy the pre-paid minutes. If you don't want a Virgin Mobile then try looking around Target or Wal-Mart they have lots of other plans and phones that you can try.

Been looking into them as my daughter gets older and more persistent. Haven't settled on one yet, but T-Mobile's looks pretty good. STAY AWAY from Radio Shack, theirs is a rip-off!!! I'll be interested in the answers you get. Good Luck and Good Hunting!!!
