Well, rap was always popular among young Black people because it gave a voice to our generation. It gave us somebody and something we could relate to and identify with. What most people forget (and what some people don't know at all) is that initially, rap music was not only about partying and having fun, storytelling, bragging about one's lyrical skills while roasting another MC, etc., but it was also about speaking on social and/or political issues affecting Black America. That's why it was (and still is, in some cases) so popular for us. As for the rest of the world...

Obviously, modern mainstream rap has strayed almost totally away from those concepts. The reason for this is partially due to the unfortunate condition and mentalities of some members of the Black community. But modern rap is also popular because greedy record companies and good ol' Corporate America found a way to bastardize it and sell rap to the masses as the "trend du jour" so they can make money off of it. And that, my friend, is one of the main reasons rap is so popular right now.

In my opinion, rap music is dominated by unprivileged and uneducated citizens who grew up deprived. They then took the easiest route to stardom and riches: Rap music.
Rap music is often about the crime that the artists were involved in before they became famous. The artists lived a life where people lived backwards the way we used to before more civilized times. It is man at it's simplest. Survive and reproduce. Many people find this appealing because that is how we are at our core. Plus lots of rap is good dance music. I hope this answers your question.

rap music has always been synonymous with rebellion and violnce as you would notice. It is the music of the masses who doesn't know where to go to or to follow whom. That is why rap has been so popular, not only for the blacks, but because majority of our population is part of the society i've just said earlier.

depends on what kind of rap your talking about, maintstream rap (most known as gangsta rap, not all but most) or underground rap, whether people know it or not it is a way of expressing emotion, and for the actual gangsters in the bad neighborhoods, they listen to it because they can relate and for some its a way of doing the crime without really doing it, as for the "wanksters" i really dont know why they would listen to it other than to catch a mood or be humurous or dance to it or just study it (not much to study but you learn the rappers lifestyles) as for underground rap, such as atmosphere, i listen to that because its creative and its not about all the bad stuff in life, theres hope in that music, i can relate to a lot of what hes saying too so it helps at times

why do people have to answer this so racistly? not that im offended, i hardly get offended by anything. Anyway, this is a pretty simple quiestion to answer: because people like it! To the person above who said "lots of rap is good dance music", you are confusing rap with R&B, which is a typical mistake.

Because everyone wants to be a musician, but not many people have the dedication to actually learn how to make it, so they become rappers.
