Unfortunately, no. The Explorer will continue to get bad fuel mileage, as will the Ranger, they are not economy vehicles that is for sure. The new design Explorers are no better in the fuel mileage department either. It makes no sense, that the Crown Vic with a V8 can get 30 mpg on the highway, and the Explorer 18-20. It's all in the gearing.
Update: As for the extra "breathing" this engine is going to be doing, don't forget that every aspect of the operation of this engine is computer controlled. The computer determines how much air and fuel enters the engine, not the exhaust you use. You pump in more air and the computer will respond with more fuel, constantly attempting to keep the engine at a constant mixture.

Yes, duals on a truck can increase fuel economy. On your Explorer however, probably not. You can't put true dual exhaust on the Explorer as you should have four convertors on it, if not four you have two for sure and they are both inline with each other after the headpipes merge and before the muffler. The best and most effective way for you to increase your economy is to install a set of headers. Even with headers you will still have a single exhaust system as they will need to be emissions compliant which means they will have bung fittings for the o2 sensors and they will merge (2 into 1) then feed into the cats which you could replace with aftermarket hi flow cats. The cats need to be in place and the o2 sensors have to be there also, your truck is computer controlled and fuel injected. Actually, thats a bunch of crap, you just need the o2 sensors to make it run right, the cats are there to please the environmentalists and burn up the unburnt gas that leaves the engine. The o2 sensors will read whatever comes out of the engine and the computer will adjust air and fuel accordingly. After the cats the rest of the system would need to be increased in size for better flow and a good performance muffler and at that point you could go with dual tailpipes for the dual look out the rear if you wanted. One single 2 1/2 inch tailpipe exiting in the stock location would suffice just fine. The best thing to do if you are serious about making the changes is to look up Doug Thorley headers or Gibson headers. They both manufacture complete, emission compliant exhaust systems for vehicles that other brands don't bother with. There stuff is the highest quality you will find and I have never had a problem installing them, they have always fit perfectly. Even after all of this you may not see an increase in economy but you will definately notice more performance and way better sound. If you just replace the muffler with a performance muffler and bigger tailpipe, you will just notice a little more sound. I have a set of Gibson headers and a flowmaster 40 series muffler on my Durango. It runs and sounds great but I only get 15 mpg.

The short answer is yes; however, only to a certain point. It all has to do with back pressure within your engine. You don't want to relieve all the back pressure because you can burn valves which will cause even bigger problems. My advise; take it to an exhaust specialty shop. They know what they're doing, and can do a first class job. It won't be cheap, but well worth it.

actually yes it can. The air flow through you truck will be much more efficient. not only will it improve mpg will will increase Horse power and will sound awesome too. You will actually get a more efficient truck if you add a cold air intake though, or you could do both and your mpg will really improve dramaticaly

Letting your baby breathe can only improve the performance.
No vehicle will behave poorly because it gets too much air.
Besides, some Flowmasters or Dynaflows will sound much better too!

Newer cars and trucks need back pressure to run properly . But if your converter is clog it would help your milage to replace it .
