Start > Run > type: gpedit.msc > press 'Enter' > expand "User Configuration" in left pane > expand "Administrative Templates" in left pane > highlight "Desktop" > double-click "Remove recycle bin from desktop" > select "Enable" > click "Apply".

Close the editor > hit "F5" to refresh the desktop and remove the recycle bin.

Replace the recycle bin by returning to the group policy editor and selecting either "Disable" or "Not Configured" (which is the default setting).

The recycle bin is a non-removable icon. If you don't believe that:

1. Right click a blank portion of the desktop
2. Choose properties
3. Click desktop tab, then customize desktop button
4. At the top of the dialog box you will see the desktop icons that can be displayed (or not displayed) on the desktop. The recycle bin is NOT one of the icons.

But if you absolutely want to remove the recycle bin icon from the desktop the best way is to use the free Microsoft Tweak UI PowerToys utility:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/downloads/powertoys.asp

Once you've installed the utility, in the left column hierarchy you can click on desktop. The right column will show six items (IE, Outlook, My Computer, My Documents, My Network Places, and Recycle Bin) that you can check or uncheck to appear or not appear on the desktop. You won't be able to move it to another folder or location without some very serious modifications to the registry.

Tweak UI was developed by the same engineers who developed XP. They created a utility that allows you to modify a bunch of things in XP..... not just the desktop display.

I'm pretty sure it's planted there no matter what

I think it's coded in the XP operating system to stay there, I wouldn't know how to **** with that though...

Indeed. You can't. Unless you use a program related to Window Blinds. =) I thought you could myself, but I was wrong.

You have to mess with the registry. Look up registry tweaks on google.
