With the air more stagnant than forecasters had predicted, pollution regulators in Louisville and Southern Indiana declared an air-quality alert Tuesday that continues Wednesday.
That could pose health problems for some residents and some area hospitals were reporting beginning to see people with respiratory problems in emergency rooms.
Other developments related to the heat:
Today’s temperatures are expected to hit the mid-90s again, prompting the National Weather Service to continue its heat advisory.
Area homeless shelters reported heavy use Tuesday as people sought relief from the heat.
Utilities in Kentucky and Indiana are asking customer to help conserve energy as air conditioning use raises the demand for power.
As long as the hot conditions continue to contribute to the creation of ground-level ozone, which can irritate lungs, the Louisville air district and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management are recommending those with heart or lung disease, older adults and children to reduce prolonged or heavy exertion when outdoors.
Predictions Monday afternoon that nature would help keep the air clean with winds of at least 6 mph turned out to be short lived. “The forecast changed,” Art Williams, executive director of the Louisville air district, said Tuesday.
He said preliminary readings from Monday evening that were reviewed by officials Tuesday now show the region topped the national ozone standard at a monitor in Oldham County.
The conditions that caused those readings are likely to continue for a couple of days.
But some relief may be on the way. Highs tomorrow are expected to top out in the lower 90s and on Friday remain in the 80s.

Have you ever heard of the "Ohio Valley". Lower areas tends to be very humid. Humidity makes it seem much hotter than it actually is. The high humidity inhibits the evaporation of your perspiration into the air, as the air is already full of moisture, so it stays on your skin and just rolls off you.
Dry heat out west is more tolerable. The dryer heat allows your perspiration to evaporate much quicker into the air, and in doing so, has a cooling effect on your skin, thereby allowing your body's natural air conditioner to cool you down.
Wearing loose fitting, white or lite colored clothing will help keep you cool. If you have darker colored hair, wear a white or lite colored hat to keep sun off your hair, as it will heat up your head very quickly.
Chinese say, for good health, keep the feet warm and the head cool.
It was so hot today, I saw a robin carrying its worm with a pot holder.
It was so hot yesterday, I got off the bus and had three people stuck to me.

hot!!!!! what's hot?
i just found out that we had 13 days in july which was 110 or higher degrees. broke 3 records. tied one.
oh yeah!!!!!!! i live in Phoenix Arizona. and you are getting the hot wave we had that did all the above for us.
just drink a lot of water, don't gulp it down, sip it all day, it should be about a gallon for the whole day. that is they way we handle it every year here in Phoenix. and when ever you can go into a resturant and cool down, you can buy a soda and take your time in drinking it, (while cooling down with the ac)
at night if you don't have ac at home, put a full size wet towel over you naked body with the fan blowing on it, it will help you cool down, if you can't be naked, ware you swim suit. and then lay the wet towel on you.
hope it helps.

I just moved to Kentucky to my hometown. it is hot here too. I moved here from Columbus Ohio and i miss it. It always got hot there. We had horrible electric bills there because we cranked the air conditioner down as far as it would go...I hope you have an air conditioner or central air where ever you live

because people are still overpopulating and the trees (shade) are being cut down for homes and shopping centers to be built. I wonder if there were a law that all the parking lots had to be painted white in the summer, would this make the air cooler??? zpg
