When the PC starts, it's giving 2 very short beeps, followed by (I think) 8 standard beeps. My PC is using AMI BIOS and I've looked up the POST beeps. I am somewhat confused with the number of beeps I am supposed to compare with. Should I take into account the initial 2 very short beeps (totalling the beeps to 10) or exclude them (totalling the beeps to 8)? So far, from the AMI BIOS site, 8 beeps means there's something wrong with my display read/write. I am not sure if this refers to my motherboard or my video card... 10 beeps means there's something wrong my CMOS read/write...help..

Remove the video card and test it on another computer. If it works, then your mobo needs replacing or a repair. Most mobos are warrantied for 3 years. Check your memory also, it may not be seated well, most POST beeps involve memory.

The two posts I just read are very accurate. I'll add that you might want to unplug the monitor as well while booting. I've had the monitor go bad to the point that the circuitry that told the computer what the monitor was (the model, features, etc) screw up the POST (Power On Self Test). Next I'd reset the BIOS. It won't hurt and has helped me many many times.

sometimes **** happens the best way it to remove all the cards PCI and memory and reinstall DONT just check to see if they are tight. removing them scratches the contacts and sometimes that is what they need, ;it is not logical but it works most of the time
