Originality is a very risky gamble for a production company. They don't want to lose money. They look for what they consider a "sure thing", and for them it is to do a remake. It doesn't take that long for a remake to come along. I know they are talking about remaking "the Breakfast Club, Adventures in Babysitting, and many more. They figure if it worked a decade ago...why not now with some new faces.
That's like the music morons who thought it was a good idea for Jessica Simpson to remake Berlin's "Take my Breath Away" from Top Gun or Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots Were Made For Walkin'".
The execs think that that is a safe gamble than going with a person who has a new idea.

This world is doomed and Superman ain't coming to save it. Originality is one trait that society doesn't have. 50 years ago, people spent their time doing things that sparked the creative side of their brains, but now, thanks to the computer and everything else, they can only feed on the creative past. This is probably their theory: We go forward by looking back.
So, be a hero, help the rest of these struggling capitalists to learn a thing or two about innovation.

Because they try to do original things, but they masses of morons that pay for movie theatre tickets which are 14-24 year olds don't like original stuff very much. Production companies are in business to make profit, not to be original.

New ideas aren't guaranteed to sell with the public. Recycled old ideas often are.
That's why these companies are "mainstream."

These things are here. You just have to look harder. There is too much crap to browse through these days.
Some of the "new things" that we want are here. Just too expensive. Like Plasma TV's. Real fingerprint security on laptops. Real 3D monitors (have you seen that yet?).
Some of the technology is hindered, thanks to Bush. Like stem cell funding.

Because it's a big business now and they only want to do what's safe by selling what they know will work.

the idea is to get a bigger audience. Most writers these days aren't writing for larger audiences. They are writing for niches.
