I was just wondering....

IF there was a group home set up for pregnant teen mothers where they could live through out their pregnancy and for 8-12 weeks after giving birth, would it be a good place to go. Here you would be taught basic parenting and life skills, prenatal classes and have to help and support you need to get through your pregnancy. You would have someone who would help take you to your appointments and be your labour coach while in the hospital.

I realize such places exist (atleast here in Canada) but are few and do not help everyone in this situation.
My best friend and I were contemplating on starting such a group home. She has a social work background and I have a labour & delivery nursing background.

Just wanted people's opinions about this....

It would not be that we are promoting teenagers having babies but would be a place for them to go when they had no where else.
We realize this is not a way to get rich and this not the reason why would be doing it.
Although neither of us were teen mothers this is a cause that is dear to our hearts.

So my question is alone1, I was wondering if this is something that would help our growing population of teenage mothers who have no where else to turn?

I think this is the best question I've seen. I don't advertise my situation, but I'm 9 months pregnant and living in a maternity home. It is a wonderful place. It's called "transitional living" here but my kids and I (I have two already from a prior marriage) have a safe place to live for up to 15 months. They have already helped me get into counseling, which was a huge relief of stress. I am all about helping myself, so I am not using most of their services but I'm starting my second year of college this semester. I couldn't do that without some help, and these people are helping me so much.
There are rules (most girls here hate the rules!), and that's something you need to make sure you enforce. It's got to be strict or it won't work. These girls aren't going to like that but they will appreciate you in the long run.

All in all, I think it's a great resource. They need all the help they can get. They need labor classes, job skills, etc etc etc and they need to learn how to raise a baby.... a place like this is just what some girls need. If you wanna email me and ask any other questions feel free.

I'm not a teen mother, but I think it's a wonderful idea. And, yes, I believe it would definatly help with the problem you identified. In my area (Detroit), there is a high school for pregnant teens and they do similar things for the soon-to-be teen mothers. I met some of the girls and they were so grateful that the high school existed. In fact, I think they got an even better education in that school than they would have anywhere else in Detroit. I think the same would happen in your group home...the girls would end up being even more prepared for being a mom than the rest of us. I think you should go for it! Best of luck to you and your friend!

That sounds like a great idea...but you should really make sure that you promote safe sex practice and the difficulties that come with being a teen mother in addition to supporting an already pregnant teen. It may become alot of work but if you really have the heart and the drive to make it happen then go for it. Best of luck to you!

Great idea. I wish there would have been such a place when I had my baby at 17, even if it was just a day program and I went home at night then came back. It would have been a wonderful opportunity to meet other moms my age and learn how to care for my baby.

That sounds like an awesome idea! Teenagers in that situation need more help then they're currently getting.
