a big block usually has more displacement per cylinders. generally speaking a small block is about 6.0 liters and under where a big block is usually larger than 6 liters. thereare a few exceptions like a 350 olds big block. A big block takes up about 1 1/2 times as much room as a small block the banks that the cylinders are on are spread apart more than a small block like. the cylinder heads are also alot bigger. big blocks are alot easier to get more power out of. but harder to keep cool. another diference is that parts are more expensive for a big block than a small block.

The difference is the height of the deck: from the crankshaft centerline to the top of the block - where the heads are bolted.
A taller block allows an engine to use longer connecting rods (stroke) for more torque and HP.
Small blocks can be assembled with special crankshafts having longer 'throws' to give them larger displacement and stroke than their as-designed normal configuration.
Plymouth had a 1958 350 CID block which was a big-block design. Chrylser also had their 273/318/340/360 "LA" family of small block V8s. Their 383/440 "B" and "RB" engines were big blocks, as was the 426 Hemi.

Several manufacturers built V8 engines in a huge variety of displacements but only using a couple of basic "families" of designs. Each family would have similar cylinder heads, exhaust systems, etc, and mostly differ by bore and stroke. Fans nicknamed the families "big block" and "small block" (among other things) to help keep track of the different designs. For example, Chevy big blocks include the 396, 427, and 454, while their small blocks include the 327, 350, and 400. Note that the largest of small blocks are often bigger than the smallest of big blocks.

Big block and small block chevy?
They are totally different. The biggest difference is in the cylinder heads where the big block heads have the valves offset and the small block are all in a line. This makes the BB heads very wide compared the small block. Additionally, BB parts are a little more expensive. You can make great HP with both SB and BB. If you want much more than 450 cu inches, you should go BB.

Well., the difference is over all size of the motor, the cubic inches
is bigger in a big block and the length of the stroke is bigger in a big block the big block is more of a pulling engine, a small block engine is more for a passenger car.
