Knowing that two men couldn't possibly create a living being, and yet if they wanted a child they could adopt, do you think homosexuals were created to ensure that the world would not be overrun with people?

Well, the term "creation" could imply some sort of intelligent design by a god or gods, or man, or alien or what have you.

However, evolution does not create anything. Evolution is a process and has no foresight. Survival of the fittest tends to drive evolution, so anything that reduces reproduction tends to be bad for the species. This does not mean it can't happen. A genetic mutation could form that makes people avoid reproduction, but this gene would never be passed on by those who have it, unless it were some sort of random confluence of recessive alleles.

I know this sounds pedantic, but we are left with evolution after we rule out a creationist God, a mad scientist, or an alien Johnny Appleseed. I think there could be a genetic answer to homosexuality, but it is likely to be random and non-inheritable. I think the overpopulation scare may be responsible for some nurture aspects of behavioral development in homosexuals, but it could just as easily be due to changes in public morality that make homosexuality more visible.

BTW, genetic modification, cloning, and mechanical incubators could make it possible for two men to produce both offspring since men have both X and Y chromosomes. However, if the technology was used with women they could only produce more women. Reminds me of a story I'm writing about technological amazons.

If your premise is correct, how do you account for homosexual behavior between Bonobo chimpanzees? In primate populations, homosexual behaviors primarily account for the easing of tensions between group members.

Someone mentioned disease as being a natural population control device. This is true, as are things like famine and natural catastrophes.

On a more religious note, if you believe people are 'created' you believe in a creator - a god of sorts, and then it is unlikely you would believe that homosexuality is a creation but rather a choice. If you don't believe in creation, you believe (most likely) in evolution, in which case your premise still doesn't pan out, because the majority of my gay friends have surrogate mothers/fathers and ergo their own, biological offspring - which would negate their inability to have children. Just a thought...

That could be an answer if one believes that homosexuality is created by genetic coding and therefore it is merely a normal biological process without an actual reason for existing.
But what if the awakening of homosexuality within an individual later on in life could be brought on by social/ cultural conditioning then one may also look to human psychology and anthropology for other types of answers. I don't think there is a simple straight forward answer to this question.

Very good premise. The world is already overrun with people in many places. However, as the stress level of overcrowding rises, pregnant women will suffer emotional distress, and their stress hormones will be surging through their bloodstreams into those tiny developing fetal brains. Some researchers believe that stress hormones are converted to male sex hormones in the fat of pregnant women, and that it effects the development of the fetal brain. It was a plausible theory when I was in college, and so far, there is some indication that it may in true at least in some cases.

First, what about the couples that include 2 women? They are homosexual too.
Second, what do you mean by 'created'?
I don't think homosexuals were 'created' for population control, they are created to live their lives like anyone else. If there were something out there trying to control the population they would just make women infertile or make eunuchs or something...

I don't believe humans were "created" for any higher purpose. Homosexuality is part of the normal range of human behavioral variability. You also seem to ignore the fact that being homosexual does not prefent one from procreating; plenty of homosexuals have children.

No. Very few homosexuals adopt children. War, diseases, abortion & natural disasters will keep population down.

From a religious or perhaps even a biological perspective, I would say that that certainly does not sound unreasonable.
