Try going to the all night drugstore and find some Sensodyne toothpaste. It is expensive compared to the ordinary stuff but it works after a few brushings for sensitive teeth.
While you are there, look for Anbesol. or Chloraseptic .

Numbing it is probably your best solution. If you don't want to use Orajel or Anbesol try taking a whole clove (yes, the spice) and putting it between your lip and the tooth. Also, a warm compress held on your cheek or wherever the pain is might help. It won't kill you to take tylenol...along with the other things suggested.

The dentist will recommend ibuprofen. Having suffered with the worst teeth anyone could possibly have, I can only tell you the dentist is right. You can stay natural and suffer, or take the pill and numb it. Your choice.

Have someone poke you in your eye; that will take the focus off your tooth.
