Sometimes gaining the top will cost friendships. But, those friendships were obviously weak. Being at the top means you are "1." Yes, it is always lonely at the top.
There was a song titled "One is the lonelyest Number"

Never having been at the top of anything, I can answer this question in only one way, by what others who are at the top say about their experiences.
Bill Gates says he finds being the richest man in the world is a bother some times. He enjoys his and wife's philanthropic organization. He is NOT lonely.
Warren Buffet says he "enjoys" doing what he does and has fun investing in companies that are undervalued. He is not lonely. in fact, newspaper and journal accounts of many other "people at the top" say they do not feel lonely what-so-ever.
I hope this answers your question entirely.
Best wishes!

you don't have to be at the top to be lonely. life in general is a very lonely place. especially when you are older past 30 and have been single all your life

I believe this statement will come from a sucessful but selfish man whom step on his peers to climb to the top. Therefore being up there is lonely with no one to share his acheivement. Not right down there..there will be a bunch of hungry Crocs waiting to devour him.

You might have a hard time trusting people since it will be harder to decide who is genuine and who isn't. There will also be a lot of envy or people trying to take your place.
