No, perhaps it's just the people who answered your question believe that kids should learn the value of work.

Not necessarily! I refuse to give my 16-year old money that he or she can earn. If they need something, I would probably give them money, but if it is for 'fluff' stuff -- movies, games, things that they can live without -- then I expect them for be responsible for it. It is not always a question of 'who is poor?'
My kids thought that all you had to do was write a check and get money. They did not realize that to write a check and cash it requires money in the bank. The bank does not give money away for free. They did not equate earning money from a job puts money in the bank so that we can buy food, pay teh electric bill, the cable bill, etc.
My youngest often quibbles about running out of gas money. I tell her to stay home or be more judicious about how often she goes off somewhere, and budgets her gas, especially at these prices.
We talk about the good old days when bread was 10 for $1.00, but many people brought home $75.00 a week and less. The weekly paycheck may be $750.00/week now, but bread costs $2.29/loaf or 10 for $22.90 -- big increase!
It is a lesson in responsibility and values. In some cases, yes, it is that some people cannot afford to have their kids spending their little income, because they have to live paycheck by paycheck. Ask your parents to list the bills they pay each month and their income. If there is money left, then add $200/week for food.
If you don't have to work, be glad. Polish the spoon. If you have to work, learn that money 'does not grow on trees.' Only the paper it is made with does.

The reason they said no isn't cause they are poor, its cause at that age, if you can work for money then you should. It's about gaining responsibility. I started working when I was 16 and by 17 I was making atleast $10 an hour waitressing. I loved it. I could spend my money on what I wanted, when I wanted. I didn't have to ask for anything which I loved cause I have always been independent. It's enpowering. We're not poor. We just want you to get off your a** and quit asking us for stuff.

I don't think that they will not give their 16 year old because they feel they are poor....it has nothing to do with how much money they have. It has everything to do with teaching that child responsibility!!! No one wants there 16 year old child to be a dependant, spoiled, lazy, brat. Having a little summer job teaches responsibility, gives the teen a sense of pride and accomplishment. And prepares them for the real world, which is right around the corner.

Expecting your 16 year old to have a job has nothing to do with being poor - it is about making sure they know what it takes to earn a dollar. That way they will learn to use money wisely and not end up poor themselves.

I still have the house. So I'm not poor in assets yet. But I've been out of work since December have used up my 401k and unemployment and behinds 2 house payments so far.
We are eating what we have in the house right now. Fortunately I was a st ocker upper and we still have a variety of canned foods and frozen meat right now.
Both of my teens have applied for work.
Will have to go to St. Vincent De Paul's tomorrow much as I have been avoiding it. Cause you gotta have gas for the car to job hunt and we are out of Milk.
But we are better off than many.

I am broke all the time but surely not poor.
I have 2 16yr olds, I expect them to help out around the farm to understand the value of money in addition to a regular allowance for doing daily house chores. That doesnt make me poor, it makes my kids earn something and not expect me to dole out the money when they want it.

Why does that mean you are poor? Maybe you just don't want your kids to mooch of you and never do anything for themselves? I'm guessing you are 16 and want your mommy and daddy to just hand you money. Well good for them for NOT! Grow up and get a job

You would have to define "poor" .
It seems to me probably everyone in here owns a computer, most lively several TV's and at least 1 car.
I would not consider that poor.
Just because you don't have everything other people have, does not make your poor.
