First of all -- "insular"?
You mean... they live isolated, on islands? For some, I could see it happening. But you might have meant to say "insecure". ^_^
Celebrities make social acquaintances through their works -- be it movies, music, television, or even co-writing books. An actress may find herself liking her co-star, and a music artist may become friends with someone who appears on his album.
They also may be friendly with their agents, publicists, and stylists. Celebrities have a wide range of people helping them out -- so it wouldn't be hard to find a few friends among them.
This is also why they go through many relationships -- so many good-looking, well-funded people to choose from! =)

They don't too many people want to be their friend. Most of them have a large family, friend support system. They don't need to seek others in their life.
