Since you're going to burn it on a CD-R and not a DVD+-R, then you'll have to make it into a VCD (video-cd) if you want it playable on a DVD player. And you have make sure your DVD can play VCD's as well.

Oh, and you'll have to encode the avi file first. Look for a program called AVI2VCD or goolgle search it and read up on it.

You have to convert the avi to vcd or svcd format first, then you have to confirm that your dvd player will play video discs. I've never burned a disc with Alcohol I just use it for a virtual mount can't help you there.
