My friend is moving to Costa Rica for a year to study and is having a party this weekend, what sort of gift should I bring? Something classy, but not too over the top.

Maybe a disposable camera so they can take pictures of the places they are seeing, a phone card so they can call when they get homesick, some stationary and a book of stamps so they can write you. Call it a homesick survival kit.

Something they can take with them but not an ornament or a dust collector. What would be really useful would be a high-quality map or street directory of Costa Rica. No one ever gives gifts this useful. Why don't you be the first?

Find out where you can purchase costa rican postage in the us, and provide a small amount, plus a small box of nice stationery for old fashioned letter writing. www.usps.gov can give you postage amounts for letters between the two countries, but I'm not sure where you buy the postage.
