It might not be blood, but that's what it looks like. He's still eating and otherwise not acting too strangely, but I'm concerned. Does anybody with experience with goldfish know if there's anything I can do?

Hey, Steve T, you insensitive schmuck! I've had this goldfish for 4 years, and he was a frickin' wedding present! I've seen him grow from about an inch to more than 4 inches. Goldfish can live for more than 20 years. Why don't you go flush something important to you down the toilet??? Maybe your brain? Nah, it don't seem that important to you.

Wow!! I have never personally witnessed this but have heard it has something to do with worms under the scales... Please go to this website and scroll down to two or three sections. It can be treated as noted in the URL listed below... I hope you can get it remedied
http://www.goldfishinfo.com/ailment2.htm#worms
Also.. this is a good article (website) that you should possibly print out and keep so in case other problems arise, you would be apprised of the problems.

Is it discolored like a bruise? He may have ran into something or got stuck behind a decoration (opportunity here to evaluate your decoration placement). He may have some slight hemorrhaging which would cause some discoloration.
If it looks veiny- check the tail and fins- then it is a symptom of septicemia. This is caused by poor water conditions, try a 25% water change every 3 days for a couple weeks. It should clear up.
If it looks like an open wound then it is an ulcer. He may have scraped himself on something in the tank. To prevent secondary infections make sure the water is perfect. Do consistent 25% water changes and keep an eye on your water parameters.
Fish are very resilient if they are in healthy water. If you make sure you are providing him with a healthy ecosystem then he will kick what ever he has got.
If you want to medicate- if he is eating and swimming around then I wouldn't- a great medication is Melafix, it can be used with Pimafix. They will help with most fish ailments and they are very gentle. Whenever you add medicine the level of oxygen in the water drops, if you don't have one you may need to add an air stone.
This website has images of many fish ailments-you may be able to diagnose your baby little better.

does he have tankmates? or sharp objects in the tank that could have caused him to bleed?
it has happened to my goldfish before, but his scales were changing color due to mating season (according to vet).
if you don't see any improvement or if it gets worst, call a vet (even if it sounds silly because he's just a fish) or go to a fish store with knowledgable staff who can recommend an antibiotic. if the latter is the case, you'll have to set up a separate hospital tank.

I think it will be okay. That happened to my fish not too long ago, and it healed in 3 days. It should be okay, but don't count on it.
