Because so many Muslims (certainly the most visible) are so excitable and extreme in their statements and demonstrations, is the entire culture and religion susceptible to being held to a lower standard of behavior than the West, therefore being marginalized when they really want to be heard? What could they do to help themselves be heard?

They are not being held at to a lower standard...They are performing below the standard.
They could cease all hostilities, introduce democratic principals to their people, treat others as they want to be treated.

Yes, Muslims are being marginalized by the rest of the world but I guess the Muslims don't have any other way to be heard. I don't think the world cares about their problems. Most people just believe they are all terrorists and the Israeli's are the good guys.
