There are 3 reasons for the XBOX's poor heat dissipation.
#1 The XBOX uses an extremely high amount of electricity.
http://reviews.cnet.com/4531-10921_7-6398157.html
"160 watts of power, over twice as much as the original Xbox, which draws 74 watts, and the PlayStation 2, which draws about 50. In fact, the great white beast chomps down more electricity than almost every piece of living room electronics we tested, including the JVC RX-D702 A/V receiver, the Denon DVD-3910 DVD player, and a DirecTV HD TiVo. The only pieces of A/V gear that draw more power than the 360 are big-screen high-definition TVs."
#2 When the XBOX 360 was released, it was discovered that the power transformer in the 360's power cord doesn't dissipate heat quickly enough and it overheats unless you store it high above the floor or away from enclosed spaces.
People kept getting errors and shutdowns because of the heat.
#3 The XBOX, drawing so much power, needs a larger fan unit but due to space restrictions of the box design, IT DOESN'T HAVE A FAN LARGE ENOUGH.
The 360 needs at least 3 fans in my opinion - or - possibly liquid cooling but due to cost function, it doesn't have either of those solutions.
YES It is normal for the 360 to get really warm.
You can help mitigate the problem by making certain it is in an open aired, cool dry place and by being certain the intake/exhaust is clear of all objects.
There are also after market fan units available for purchase online.

will xbox 360 runs quicker, has a greater helpful pictures card. with xbox u could make ur very own avatar, earn awards to customise ur avatar, the controller feels greater organic around ur hand, the button format is greater helpful. The xbox has a FPS sequence referred to as Halo that's lots of exciting to play and the recent Halo 4 became chosen because of fact the wonderful xbox game of 2012. The PS3 has a number of overall performance themes and the controller sucks only please do no longer purchase it. although do no longer purchase a console yet because of fact the Xbox 720 is coming i think of this Christmas and the ps4 additionally, and the ps4 seems to have given the 720 alot to stay as much as and Microsoft continues to be no longer asserting something greater with reference to the 720 yet do no longer purchase a console yet, only wait.

is it OK no, is it normal yes, and you can get a second fan unit that plugs in the back to keep it cool, it plugs between the power cord and the back inlet holes, that is for when you have it in a tight place, that does not get allot of air, keep it out in a free space you should be OK for a bit.
