The conversion to Christianity was to allow men to take over the world. The matriarchal religion was quite prevalent in Europe and other countries and power was in the hands of the women. When men discovered that women were not the ultimate bearers of children and that men had something to do with the creation of children, the basic woman's religion was doomed. The conversion to the patriarcal or male control of faith resulted in the witchburnings and destruction of most artifacts that ever referenced a matriarcal religion. In this conversion the virgin Mary had to be given a blessed place because people were used to their mother or matriarcal God and the conversion would not have been complete without some form of woman in a higher place.

Because Emperor Constantine was a pagan, who while at war, prayed for a miracle to win a battle and in his vision it was told to him that he should fly the Christian cross, he'd be victorious. He did as the vision told him, won his battle and believing it to be a sign of a God he didn't worship, felt it was best if he converted as a sign of faith to the one who helped him in battle. He converted after issuing the Edict of Milan in 313 to end persecution of Christians. Everyone else jumped on the bandwagon because they wanted to do what the Emperor did and not displease him ("I say jump, you say how high") and because he was famous, it made Christianity the "hot" religion for future ages, rulers and common people.

I'm just guessing but it probably had to do with the fact that people of the same religion tend to get along with each other better. Also the Bible informs Christians to tell others about Christ. But like I said, I'm just guessing. I wasn't there.

Christianity was the new hip fad. You convince one leader that it's "cool"...and suddenly, people are being forced to believe it! Back then, they were looking for a change, and Christianity became the most popular thing.
