Quantum torpedoes are much more powerful. They replaced the photon torpedoes. They came standard on ships like the defiant, this is around the timeline of "Star Trek First Contact". Deep space 9 has lots of references to quantum torpedoes. They use zero point energy (same type of energy that powers Atlantis in Stargate Atlantis.) They are better against starship shields and have a bigger yeild than photon torpedoes (about 2-3 times).

first of all their is no cash in the federation, second quantum torpedos pack more of a punch in battles. photon torpedos are the older version torpedos quantum torpedos are the newer better more effecient version. quantum torpedos were created as a more effecient torpedo to fight the borg and dominion threats.
