When playing Monopoly, make up your rules BEFORE you play so everyone has an even playing field. We usually up the PASSING GO payment to $400, double if you land on it. If you want to buy property the first time around, make that clear also. You can do whatever you want in Monopoly.

Lot's of people have "extra" rules for Monopoly, like not buying property until you've been around the board once. It depends on who you play with.

If you want to make that a rule you can. I used to have a video game version of Monopoly and I think you had to wait once to buy property. Here is a link to the official rules http://richard_wilding.tripod.com/monorules.htm

In my household, we only use that rule when betting money. In actuality, you could buy stuff from the start. I prefer going around once first, it gives you a feel of what's hot and whats not on the board!!!
