Generally, you need to get a reputable agent (try SAG: http://www.sag.org/ or AFTRA http://www.aftra.org/ for details).

An agent gets breakdowns from studios and can send you out on calls, or you check local listings (Back Stage: http://www.backstage.com/ or a site like this: http://www.auditions.com/) for independent, student, and amateur films that are casting.

In most cases, you'll be given a side (part of the script) to memorize and perform on camera, usually with a production assistant or the casting director. The casting director and/or director will then go through those tapes to find people they think are suitable for the role, and (in some cases) call you back for one or more callbacks to possibly read with other actors.

If you're looking for a role in a major motion picture, you have a tough row to hoe. If you're in a city with an active film community (Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Austin, for example), you stand a better chance of working in small films or even doing theatrical showcases that casting directors will sometimes attend.

Good luck, though.

The best way to go is to get an agent. Make sure u have pictures just incase..if ur were auditioning for a play u most definitely have 2 have 1. But just incase, get u one. Some ppl get lucky if the audtion is in their hometown and they don't need an agent 2 get there.

If you live in a city where movies are sometimes filmed, the theater section of your local newspapers may list movie auditions for extras.
