I've heard that rule before as well. However I looked on the Hasbro toy site and under monopoly It just said if a player lands on a property they can buy it. It never seemed to mention you must go around the board once before buying property. There are several editions of the game however so I included the link for you to check out the edition you have.

Milton Bradley once said rules are made to be broken so feel free to make your own. I've played computer versions of the game and was able to purchase as soon as I land on a property. Computer games are usually stickler for following the rules so I say no, you can purchase at once.

i dont think so. what would be the point of that? its not like you would earn points or even that much money. my dad was an avid monopoly player and we never waited to go around once. sorry, i dont feel like pulling out the rules right now so im just speaking from personal experience

The standard rules say you should. But players can agree on variation at the start of game and create your own "house rules".
