I read a book as a child and I can't remember the author or the title. It was about a boy who had to fight demons and he had elemental powers. He was aided by a warrior who had a demon shaped as a sword to help him. I think it was a series of books. I want to give the books to my son to read now but can't think of them.

Try "A Wizard of Earthsea" by Ursula K. Le Guin. This is just the first book of a whole series called the 'Earthsea Cycle'. In the story, Ged aka Sparrowhawk, a young mage (wizard), has to fight against a demon shadow that has been hunting him. I haven't read this book in 15 years, so I do not remember everything about it, but I do know that this series is older, the first book written/published in the late seventies/early eighties. Perhaps it is the book you are thinking of.
