The Los Angeles Dodgers have finished second place the most times since the 1969 season with 13 2nd place finishes. In the strike season of 1981, there were 2 halves to the season (the first occurrence since 1898) with each halves club meeting in a 5-game playoff prior to the ACLS and NCLS finals. The 2 national league clubs finishing second in each half (St. Louis and Cincinnati each had the overall combined best records in their respective divisions yet neither made the playoffs at all while in the American League the Kansas City Royals won the first half in spite of finishing with the 4th best record in their division and an overall losing record (50-53) when the halves were combined. For the 1981 season i have gave 1/2 point credits for each half. Here are the top 10 based on that premise:
Los Angeles Dodgers.13
Boston.............12.5
Cincinnati.........11
Chicago White Sox .10
Oakland .........9.5
Kansas City ........9
New York Mets .....9
Houston................8
Baltimore ...........7.5
New york Yankees ...7
San Francisco..........7

I'd have to guess the Red Sox more than any other. They've done it 7 straight years coming into '06.
edit: make that 8 in a row, and 12 times total since '69.
