If you go to 'start', then 'run' and type in 'msconfig'. Then select the 'selective startup' option and go to 'startup' tab. Here are all the things that load up when your computer starts, so if you have alot of things here, then there are running in the background and cause your computer to go slow. So, click on 'disable all' and some are easy to tell which programs they are, so if you want those programs to run when your computer starts like an antivirus or Windows Defender, just put a check mark next to it. Then click 'ok' and it will ask to restart the computer.
Another thing is how much RAM you have, 256 MB is ok, anything less is not good performance wise, but the more the better.
One more thing is make sure your anitvirus is up to date with virus definitions and do a full/deep scan of your system. Also, I suggest getting "Spybot Search and Destroy" to get spyware and other unnecessary software that antivirus doesn't pickup, out of your computer. Please be sure that you know what you're doing when fixing problems with using that program. It will remove files that certain programs you want to stop working.
One last thing is use 'ctrl+alt+delete' and go to the perfomrance tab and monitor your CPU usage and PF usage, this will give you an idea of how hard your computer is working. Well, i hope your computer works better, email me if it does. bye

I've had this problem too. My machine is approximately the same age, and because I use it for development, it's over due to be wiped and reloaded.
However, I have noticed that when this problem occurs, if you open the task manager and look at all processes that are running (sort them in alphabetical order), you'll see one or more iexplore.exe processes running even when there are no web browsers open. Kill them all. Then you can open your web browser and it will behave normally....at least for a while.
Not sure what is causing this. Haven't been able to find any documentation on this issue.

Try this, hit Cntl Alt / Delete and this brings up Windows Task Manager, there see whats running and how much CPU usage it takes. If you don't know what the file is write it down and do a Google search, it will tell you what the files is and what it does.
Good Luck

It could be the amount of memory you have. How much memory do you have left. Uninstall programs you no longer use. Delete any files you no longer need. Move pictures to either an online hosting company or CD's.
Clear up anything you no longer need on your PC. Run your antivirus, spyware and Adaware. Try to use another browser such as Mozilla.

Your register it's now a holy cow of mess. If you want to use Windows, keep in mind that every year you have to do a backup, format your disk and reinstall everything.
Do not worry! It's the procedure (for Windows)
