I have had a Volitans lion for sometime now and it has been eating frozen foods like a champ. Well last time I fed it was last week, Monday, and it has not been eating since that day. I feed my fish once a week. I feed the lion mainly squid but sometimes I will throw in some gulf shrimp, krill, and a silver side. The lion refuses to except frozen food from me now. How long can it go without any foods?

I would recommend feeding lionfish to the point of seeing a small bulge in their abdomen two to three times weekly. I also recommend starving lionfish for a few days to accurately recreate their natural dietary intake and, in fact. a 3-feedings/week schedule is sufficient to ensure proper growth.

Don't feed your lionfish feeder goldfish. The fat and composition of freshwater fish is different enough to cause liver problems in lionfish (or any saltwater fish). Try silversides - you can find them with the frozen food in the fish stores - on a feeder stick. If your lion is having a hard time adjusting to eating frozen you can give them a few guppies - if you have a source of ghost shrimp that is even better and some people feed damsels - but keep with the feeder stick and eventially most will start taking it. Every other day is enough - till it starts loking full but not busting. Then vary the diet too - mysid shrimp or krill.

Most fish including saltwater are fed once every two days. The best food for lion fish is frozen blood worms and brine shrimp. Its expensive but helps bring out their colors and is healthier for them. I rotate that with small goldfish of feeder guppies. Fish will continue to eat if you continue to feed them, even if they aren't;t hungry. But all you will do is cloud up your tank so its better to feed them less often than too often.

when i worked at the pet store, we would just throw 2 or 3 feeder goldfish in there tank a day, they remained beautiful and healthy, just be sure to remove any that are uneaten, they wont survive the salt water
