My hosting company registered a domain name on my behalf. What documentation do I need to assert my ownership to the domain (as opposed to it being owned by the hosting company itself)?

If you have copies of any email between you and them relating to the registration and hosting of that domain, then that should be proof enough. Any invoices they have sent you for registration and hosting? That's about the only proof there would be.

Hopefully they do not have some sort of fine print (in their Terms and Conditions) that gives them ownership of your domain for some reason.

Have you tried initiating a domain transfer with another hosting company? Or used a service like www.godaddy.com? (This is not a recommendation, just the first one that popped to mind. I personally use domainsatcost.ca)

If you have tried to reason with them and they will not release your domain name to you, then you may need to get a lawyer.

Good luck with it.

There is usually not any "legal" documentation other than your basic contract for service. Do a whois and see whos name comes up. If its not yours you may have a problem.

Do you still have the original invoice where you ordered the service and they registered the name? That is really all you should need.
