Hmmmm, here's my soapbox .Shouldn't there be a law regulating this? Shouldn't employers be required to tell you the pay for a positon before you apply so you don't waste their time and you theirs? There is nothing worse thatn getting hired and finding out you don't make enough, now you have an xtra W-2 to file for a day of work! With so many people on public aid, unemployed, in dire need of money, employers hold the resources they need like insurance, money, opportunity , shouldn't they be required to give felons, homeless, disabled, old, and the inexperienced a chance to fail first before they say no? Shouldn't employer be required to asnwer your request for employment within a certain amount of time ....say two weeks? Please write your local congressman about these issues . I am from Illinois and I am writing this to my congress peron! Thanks for listening.

Because they have the job and you are asking for it. They have the right to award it to whomever they want. An excellent way to get bounced out the door right quick is to ask right out of the box how much it pays and when is my vacation. This is prima facie evidence that you have no long-term interest in the job-- you are just looking for a paycheck and a paid vacation. Thanks for coming in. We'll let you know. Yeah, right...

You sound like a liberal, always crying to government when the world doesn't revolve exactly as you think it should. Grow up!

I disagree with some of your points. I don't think it's necessary to state salary before the interview, because a smart applicant can negotiate himself a better deal. Haggling is becoming a lost art in America, but it's a foundation of capitalism and if we want to stay in our own market we need to get it back. As for Employers being required to hire unqualified applicants to let them fail, why not just hire someone who is qualified?

All that said, I think you have a really good idea in the title. I think it would be beneficial to society if employers were required to call people back within two weeks of an interview and tell them why they weren't hired. Not just "we found a better applicant", but something specific the other applicant was better at. This way, people who consistently have difficulty finding a job will have a better shot at learning where they went wrong.

I guess my first question is why would you start a job without knowing the pay?

I do agree tho that employers should tell you something when you take the time to send in a resume to them, even a generic post card saying they chose someone else blah blah. I hate it when you send out resumes and don't get even a "YOU SUCK GO AWAY" note in the mail. Or my personal favorite you interview, and they say they'll let you know by such and such date either way, and they don't call or anything, and you make the call to get an update, and they won't take your calls..get a back bone ppl just take 3 seconds and tell them you hired someone else. I think taking the time to respond to someone you went so far as to interview should be a common practice for employers, and not doing so is just rude, and shows poor business practices.

Well, the companies that pay good usually say it right away. I've never had that problem all my employers told me how much they paid before they hired me.
I used to, if it was a job I wanted. I would call the human resources manager or the person i interviewed with. And
ask If they made a decision yet. I always got a response back.

No to all of that. You aren't entitled to every job you apply for. Are you trying to say that they have to hire everyone who applies? There wouldn't be any jobs left in this country for you if they had to do that. If they offer the job, then ask what it pays. You can always say no. Sounds like you need a reality check more than a paycheck.

If the employer won't tell you the salary, don't go to the interview.

They do not tell you because of lawyers. Too many people file lawsuits for very frivolous reasons. It is safer to not say anything.
