WEP is a wireless security option. I've heard it referred to as Wireless Encryption Protocol, Wirelss Equivalent Protection, Wired Equivalency Privacy, Wired Equivalent Privacy.

I tend to use the former option of Wireless Encryption Protocol, but I might be mistaken. Apparently that's a misnomer, it is actually the latter: Wired Equivalent Privacy.

It's specifically for wireless networks. So, if your cable/DSL router doesn't have a wireless transmitter built-in and activated and you're not setting up a wireless network, you shouldn't need to use WEP.

The security keys are only for wireless use. You would notice if a stranger tried to plug a wire into your router.

If it is not a wireless router there will be no WEP (Wired Eqivalent Protection) set on it nor can you set one on it. You cannot use it for wireless connections.
