pop some tylenol b4 you go, at least a half hour before you are ready to get tatooed. Also make sure you are not on your period or starting it soon, because your paid threshold will be lower than usual.

Take a couple Advil or Tylenol about 45 min before your appt. Honestly.. start out SMALL, for your first tattoo if your that scared DONT GET ONE! The bigger the tattoo the more pain its gonna be and it depends on where it is, fattier places actually hurt more than you think. If you have fears of blood or needles you are making a BIG MISSTAKE!!! But if you made the appt youve made your decision so take a few pain meds and you'll be fine they really dont hurt bad in most places. Follow the instructions they give you to prevent infections and ask what they recommend- remember they are professionals whether they look it or not! Good luck and I hope its come out great for you!

BE 10000% sure you really want it & have your design set & make sure you know WHERE you want it....
I have 2 of them (well, I HAD 2 of them...) the one on my ankle wasn't too bad, the one on my sacrum was awful & gave me shooting pains into both legs the whole time she did the tattoo.. (that's where the nerves exit your spine & go into your legs)
* my point being, my ankle tattoo, was $35, but 10 yrs later, I decided that it didnt' look that professional, and so I spent over $1500 and untold worse pain & blistering getting it lasered off over the course of 2 years.
you may think it's cool now, but wait until you are 30 or 40, and you probably wont like that butterfly, hello kitty, or whatever it is...
(mine was a dolphin)
the other one i have can only be seen by my husband...

I have 2 on my back the first is on my lower back just off of center. was my first and it didnt hurt too much, the second is on my shoulder blade not this one felt like someone was taking a surgical knife and cutting me open from shoulderblade to my butt.
Placement is important if your really concerned about the pain.. ask the artist where the least painful spot is (theyll know)
Otherwise if your set on one spot .. just grin and bear it. try not to think about it. maybe down a couple tylenol before you go in BUT absolutely no alcohol if they even catch a wiff of it most reputable places wont give you the tat then

A tattoo should be earned. You shouldn't take anything for the pain. Mostly they don't hurt that badly anyway. Should you take something for the pain before hand DO NOT drink alcohol. It thins the blood and will cause you to bleed more

It depends on where youre getting it done. I have 3. 1 on each arm and 1 on my upper thigh. The one that hurt the most was my thigh. Its WAY up there on my thigh like u cant see it in a bathing suit. It depends on where you get it. I made it through so it doesnt matter where you get it, you'll be fine. I'm not dead.

Never get a tattoo, but for pain relief, you can get somebody talking to you to defer your attention of the pain.

Don't forget to breathe. Really. Sounds simple and kinda stupid, but it is so easy to hold your breath and tense up. If you remember to breathe it is harder to tense up.
Bring along headphones and music and/or a book/magazine to distract you. And sunglasses for when it gets too intense. Flip em down and keep on breathing!
good luck!
