The whole myth is the basis of my Pagan path of NROOGD. it is very long and detailed but in a nutshell here it is.

Hades had seen Kore (persephone before abduction) in a feild he asked Zues to make her his wife. Zues told Demeter about this and she forbade it. Hades not to be denied, waited until Kore was in a field picking flowers with her friends, it was then that Hades acted and on his chariot rode forth and stole Kore away going to his realm. While Kore was missing Demeter then searched all over looking for her daughter. Demeter being the goddess of the weather and crops neglected her duties and that caused the first winter in Greeece. The crops started to die, animals began to starve and the people were suffering. Along with that there were no offerings for the gods either as all was dying. While Hades had Kore in his realm she did not eat of anything for a long time. He continued to ask her to marry him. Finally she relented due to weakness, but still she did not eat. Meanwhile Demeter searched everywhere. Only 2 people heard Kore's cries when she was abducted. One was Mercury the other was Hecate. When Demeter came to Mercury for information he denied knowing, but when she came to Hecate she told her of what happened. Hecate then gave Demeter her twin torches to go into the realm of Hades to look for her daughter. The gods were now imploring Zues to demand Hades to release Kore so that they will get their offerings and to let the land live. Zues finally agreed and sent Mercury to Hades with the demand that he release Kore back to the world of the living. By this time driven by hunger Kore had eaten of the pomegranate (the number of seeds varies by the story either 3,5 or 6). Hades agreed and let (now) Persephone return to the earth once again. Just before she reached the entrance Hades then told of Persephone's eating of the seeds. Since the pomegranate is the food of the dead she was not allowed to return to the living. However Zues, then ordered that every year Persephone must return back to the underworld for as many month as she ate of seeds. That is why we have winter.

There's a couple of different versions, but the one I remember is that Persephone was Demetrius' daughter. Demetrius was the goddess of harvests, and things like that.

Persephone was out in a field, gathering flowers or something when Hades kidnapped her. He told her that if she ate anything while in Hades (the place) she'd be held there for all eternity. He held her for a long time, and finally she broke. She had 4 pomegranete seeds.

Demetrius found out what had happened, and that her daughter had eaten the seeds, so she decided to strike a deal with Hades: Persephone would stay in the underworld for 4 months out of the year.

Demetrius would always be depressed when her daughter was gone, and would not make anything grow, and that's how we have winter.

I've also heard that Persephone ate the seeds because they were believed to be a contraceptive at the time, and that she was afraid of becoming pregnant with Hades' children. I don't know for sure, though.

Persephone was the daughter of Demeter, the Goddess of the harvest. Hades fell in love with Persephone and kidnapped her and took her to Hades where he married her. Demeter was so heartbroken that she made the earth barren. Zeus asked Hades for a compromise, and he agreed to release her for half the year. So Persephone spends spring and summer with Demeter, and the earth is in full bloom. She returns to Hades during the fall and winter, and Demeter leaves the earth barren in her sadness.

Persephone ate an enchanted pomegranate and had to go to Hell and become Hades' wife. Meanwhile her mother Demeter was pissed that she had to stay there forever and caused great storms and kept all the plants from going until the gods relented and let her stay with Demeter for one half of the year, when Demeter was happy and would let stuff grow, and one half with Hades as his wife, when Demeter got mad again and kept stuff from going. It's very similar to a lot of other culture's myths, including Egypt, Babylonia, Sumer, and others.

to make it short, persephone's mother was the god of harvest. Anyways, it was persephone who made her mother's joy. Hades fell in love with her because of her beauty, and he kidnapped her. No matter what he did, Persephone was always gloomy and unhappy, and would not eat. Persephone's mother was so angry and sad that she neglected all her plants and crops that all the mortals starved and all the plants were withered and dead. Zeus did not want to see his people starve to death, so he ordered Hades to return Persephone. Hades knew that once someone ate something from the underworld, they would have to stay there. When Persephone heard that she could go back to her mother, she was so glad that she accepted a pomegranite from Hades and started to eat it. Zeus knew that Persephone could not stay in the Underworld forever, or stay with her mother forever, so he said that Persephone could stay with her mother for the first three parts of the year, and she would have to return to the Underworld for the last part of the year. That is why trees lose their leaves in Winter, because of Persephone's mother's sadness. In Spring, everything blooms again, because of her mother's joy.

Persephone was the daughter of Demeter, Goddess of the Harvest. Hades happened to be above ground, saw the cute Persephone, and grabbed her and pulled down into Hades to be his wife. Demeter wasn't around when it happened, so she got really ticked when she couldn't find her daughter, so she dried up the earth until she could find her.
One of the people who had seen Hades take Persephone told Demeter what had happened so that Demeter would turn the earth back to normal (bearing fruit and stuff).
Demeter went to Hades and asked for her daughter back. Hades agreed reluctantly, but said that if Persephone had eaten anything while she was down below, that she would have to stay.
Turns out that Persephone had eaten 6 seeds of a pomegranite.
Demeter and Hades somehow worked out that because she'd eaten six seeds, she had to stay below ground with Hades for 6 months of the year, but that she could return to above ground for the other six.
As a result, according to the myth, the earth now has seasons because for six months, Demeter is happily hangin out with her daugher, but for the other six months, she's sad because Persephone's gone down below with Hades.

well, as far as i can remember palmagranite had the biggest part to play in the whole story to begin with, hades enchanted a palmagranite with a curse that would force persephone to be with him for all time, she got to eat about half of it before she was stopped, so from then on she had to spend winter down with hades because that was all the palmagranite had an effect to do

As far as I can remember, Persephone was a wife or daughter of Zeus(or someone else) and Hades fell in love with her. So he kidnapped her and she begged and pleaded (as did Zeus) so he compromised-- Persephone had to live in hell with Hades and she had to eat one pomegranate per day so she could return to the overworld and visit her family, otherwise she remained fulltime with Hades.

In classical myth, Persephone (She who destroys the sound) was abducted by Pluto to become the queen of the Underworld. She's also cited to explain natural processes, such as the change of seasons, in other words, the time Persefone spends on earth and in Pluto's domains.

She was collecting flowers with her friends when Pluto, god of dead people and underworld, appeared and carried her off to be his queen. ... Demeter, her mother, looked for her and thanks to Zeus agreed with Pluto to allow Persefone to come to living world during six months. Greeks also knew her as the Queen of the dead, whose name was not safe to speak aloud, who was named simply "The Maiden".

Way too much detail to go into here, but Wikipedia has a nice long article about the whole story.
