My 14 month old has a habbit of holding his breath when he crys really hard. Here recently he has been holding his breath so long that he will pass out for a few seconds. He will turn a little blue, but as soon as I pick him up he starts breathing again and gets his color back. Then he is fine, with the exception of him shaking a little, but I think that might be because it scares him. Is this something I should take him to the doctor about, or is it just another thing that the will eventually out grow

My daughter does this too. Scares the *&hit out of you. It's horrible. She hasn't done it in about 6 months and she's 3 now. She gets crying hard and caan't catch her breath. When she finally gets her breath, her eyes roll back in her head and she goes limp. My doctor said a lot of kids do this, especially when they're a little older because it gets your attention. He said she would grow out of it and the few seconds she is passed out will not hurt her in any way.

Yes take him to his doctor.Don't ignore him, when he does that he cuts off the circulation to his brain.Even though it's a short period of time it is a disruption of the blood getting to his brain. The fact that he turns blue is an indication that the blood is not circulating at all.I don't know but the shaking may be part of the restricted flow of blood. He just may be doing it to get attention, but it is hurting him in the process. He doesn't know he's hurting himself,he just wants attention.Think about it,if you hold your breath long enough you will past out too.Do not disregard this, pay close attention to him and get him to the doctors as soon as possible.

he might just do this out of a temper, in this case, try not to get him upset. however, that is nearly impossible. if he does get upset, try to calm him down before he gets too out of control. if this is the case, blow in his face (very gentlt) it will make him catch his breath.

or he might have asthma. to be sure he doesn't (or does) take him to the doc some time soon. not necissarily tody or tommorow, but next time he has a check-up, mention it.

if it is from a temper, shaking is good, it means he is scaring himself, and babies don't like fear. if he is afraid of his habbit, chances are, he will stop on his own before long.

***May God bless you through all the days if your life.

ps... when he passes out, try dripping cold water on his forehead, or putting a damp rag oround his neck. it will "wake him up" and then just hold him so he doesn't get dizzy from being out cold. let him stay on the ground if he can't get up: chances are he's a bit dazed. also, to be safe, make sure all talbe corners are cusioned: if he hits it when falling over, he won't have head damage.

If you feel that he needs to go to the MD, take him. It's nothing serious, lots of kids do it, i did it when i was younger. He's doing it as an attention getter, stop paying him the attention when he does it and I promise he'll stop. If by any means he does pass out, he will start breathing right after he passes out. No harm done and no damage done. Believe me it really is nothing serious and he will eventually grow out of it. Talk with parents of other kids, it's kinda common.

Well sounds as if the little one is having a little bit of a temper tanturm.
I was always told to throw water in there face and it would shock them out of it but don't do this because if they breath when you throw the water they will suck up the water and get it in there lungs.
just blow in there face and they will take a breath.
and like you did is good give him a little bit of a shake to make him come out of it..
and you are right . he will out grow it.. but it will take some time..
good luck with him..

Anytime a child so young passes out there is some danger. The longer the brain is without oxygen the threat of brain damage is there.Although it doesnt sound as if his situation is that bad,I would consult a doctor on how to get him to lessen this reaction.Good Luck!!!!!

Personally, He is only 14 months old so if it were my son he would have already called/been to his Pediatrician about this. Better safe than sorry when its comes to your childs life. You doctor can check his oxygen level right in his office and do a physical exam.

My brother used to do the exact same thing. He grew out of it. Use to worry my mum alot cause if he got hurt she wold hear any cries. But she could usually tell something wrong when he wasn't making any noise. Keep an eye on him at all times till he grows out of it.

Yes- please take him to the doctor and have him checked to be sure that this is just routine breath holding and nothing more serious.

Best wishes!
