I keep counting 8 but I have to do a homework assignment where I need to talk about "the seven deadly sins." Lust, gluttony, avarice, anger, heresy, violence, fraud and treachery are the ones that I find, are those the sins or am I wrong? To be honest with you I'm completely confused with this book.

Oh, this book is one of my favorites- I'm almost finished reading it right now.
Dante divides Hell into 9 circles, and each one divided into smaller regions.
Circle 1- Virtuous Pagans and Unbaptized Children
Circle 2- Lust (one of the seven deadly sins). Dante considered Lust to be not quite as bad as the other sins because it's so natural for human beings to commit.
Circle 3- Gluttony (another deadly sin)
Circle 4- Hoarders and Wasters
Circle 5- Wrath (deadly sin)
Circle 6- Heresy
Circle 7- Part 1- Violent against others
Part 2- Violent against self (suicide)
Part 3- Violent against God, Nature, and Art
Circle 8- Part 1- Seducers and Panderers
Part 2- Flatterers
Part 3- Simoniacs (deceitful church leaders)
Part 4- Fortune tellers
Part 5- Grafters
Part 6- Hypocrites
Part 7- Thieves
Part 8- Evil counselors
Part 9- Sowers of discord
Part 10- Counterfeiters
Circle 9- Part 1- Treachery against family
Part 2- Treason
Part 3- Treachery against friends
Part 4- Treachery against benefactors (this is where
Satan lives and where you DON'T want to end up)

All in all, the seven deadly Sins are Lust, Gluttony, Avarice, Acedia, Wrath, Envy, and Pride. Acedia is a hard concept to grasp. It is Sloth in religious matters....being too lazy or comfortable to follow God and do what is right.

Hope this helps.

Here are the seven holy virtues as opposites to the seven deadly sins. According to Dante's The Divine Comedy the sins have an order of greatness, and the virtues a respective order of greatness as well. This order is shown below from the lowest to the highest.

+ Holy Virtues +
Chastity (purity)
Moderation (self-restraint)
Generosity (vigilance)
Zeal (enthusiasm)
Meekness (composure)
Charity (giving)
Humility (humbleness)

+ Deadly Sins +
Lust (inappropriate desire)
Gluttony (over-indulgence)
Greed (avarice)
Sloth (laziness)
Wrath (anger)
Envy (jealousy)
Pride (vanity)

With love in Christ.
