MY SISTER CAN MAKE MONTHLY PAYMENTS BUT SHE DOES NOT HAVE A LOT OF MONEY TO PUT DOWN. SHE HAS ABOUT THREE WEEKS TO HAVE A BULGING?, PROTRUDING?, HERNIATED? DISC OPERATED ON OR SHE WILL HAVE PERMANANT NERVE DAMAGE OR BE CRIPPLED/PARALIZED. PLEASE HELP...I DON'T KNOW WHERE TO TURN...IT WOULD KILL US BOTH IF SHE WERE TO LOSE HER INDEPENDANCE....

ONE THING I FORGOT TO SAY IS THAT SHE WAS A WIFE AND MOTHER FOR OVER 20 YEARS AND BECAUSE SHE DIDN'T WORK OUTSIDE THE HOME SHE CAN'T EVEN GET DISABILITY...WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN IF SHE IS DISABLED BECAUSE OF THIS? I DON'T HAVE THE MONEY TO CARE FOR HER. IF YOU CAN NOT HELP PLEASE FORWARD THIS TO SOMEONE WHO MIGHT.

SINCERELY,

Most hospitals have ICTF (indigent care trust funds) provided by the state for those that are uninsured/underinsured and with limited resources.

Check with the hospital where she is to have the procedure and ask for the special accounts dept., business office, human resources etc. let them know that your sister is indigent and will need assistance with paying for the surgery.

Depending on the population of San Antonio you may also have a clinic devoted to indigent individuals. Check with your local health department and ask them to point you in the direction for financial assistance.

But remember, the hospital cannot and will not turn her around just because she doesn't have insurance. Schedule payment plans with the billing office.

Good luck to your sister!

Hospitals are only required to treat the uninsured for life threatening emergencies. She should see what medicaid can do for her, if she qualifies. Can she get a job with insurance? They usually aren't too picky about pre-existing conditions on a group policy.
