Go into the control panel .. inside you will find an icon called "Power Options" ... this is WHERE you can find and perform the task of putting your computer into "hibernate" .... it allows you to make your own choices for your own convenieince ... i.e., how long you want to hibernate, if you don't want to hibernate at all; if you only wish to hibernate for a few minutes or hours; if you NEVER want to hibernate, etc. ...
Simply go into POWER OPTIONS, and the rest - if you do not understand - you can go into "Help and Support" - and type into the search box "hibernate" - and the Microsoft site will give you numerous choices to look through - instructions, descriptions, hows, whys, etc. It is a "dictionary of information" on your Microsoft program(s) ...
I hope this helps!
As for myself - I have a personal choice of "NEVER" hibernating - but that's "me"; however, if you wish to hibernate, as shared above, you can even chose how LONG to hibernate if you wish ... all selections are of and for personal preferences ...
God Bless - Jacquie

By putting your desktop computer to sleep, you save power when your computer is idle. Standby and hibernation are two different kinds of sleep. These instructions are for Windows 98.
Manually Putting Your Computer on Standby
Steps:
1. First, save all of your work. Information in computer memory is not saved while your computer is on standby.
2. From the Start menu, select Settings, then Control Panel, then Power Management.
3. Click Standby Beside When I Push the Power Button.
4. Push the Power button.
Tips:
Not all computers have a Standby mode.
Alternatively, from the Start menu, click Shut Down. In the dialog box that appears, click Standby.
Warnings:
If there is a power failure while your computer is on Standby, work that has not been saved will be lost.
Automatically Putting Your Computer on Standby
Steps:
1. Save all work before leaving your computer.
2. From the Start menu, select Settings, then Control Panel.
3. Double-click Power Management.
4. Set the times that you want your system to go on standby, to shut off the monitor and to shut off the hard disks.
5. Click OK. Your computer will go on standby according to the schedule you have entered.
Tips:
The number of Standby options that are available to you depends on the capabilities of your hardware.
Warnings:
Work not saved in memory will be lost in the event of a power failure.
Putting Your Computer in Hibernation
Steps:
1. From the Start menu, select Settings, then Control Panel.
2. Double-click Power Settings.
3. Click on the Advanced tab.
4. At the When I Push the Power Button On My Computer screen, click Hibernate.
5. Click the Power button.
Tips:
When you put your computer in hibernation, everything that is in memory will automatically be saved. When you reopen your computer, it will open the programs and files that were open when you initiated the hibernation command.
Warnings:
Not all computers have the capability of going into hibernation. This is a function of the hardware.

That depends on the type of computer you have and its operating system (OS).
For windows, just select the Start button at the lower left of the screen and then choose "Shut Down." After making this choice, a window should appear giving you the options to either sign off, stand by, or shut down. Select "stand by" to put your computer to sleep.
Some computers will go to sleep if you press and hold down the power button on the computer for 5 seconds. Of course, some computers also will turn off if you do this.
For Mac and OS X, simply select the "Sleep" option from the apple menu and your mac will go to sleep.
