It's mostly the Cuban Americans. They despise Castro because he is a ruthless dictator, who came to power by overthrowing the Cuban govenment back in 1959. Since he has been in power, the Cuban people have lived in poverty. That's why so many of them have risked their lives to get out of Cuba and into the US.

Fidel Castro is not the President of Cuba. He was not elected to office - he overthrew the existing government and became the dictator of Cuba for the past 47 years. He had close alliances with Russia and was an avowed Communist and enemy of the United States. In 1962, he allowed the Soviets to assemble atomic weapons in Cuba and we were on the brink of World War III.

He took away private property and punished those who did not agree with him. The 79-year-old is now seriously ill - and there is speculation that he is either dead or near death. We don't know what will happen when he does die - but hopefully relations between us and them will improve.
