the phrase mad as a hatter came from victorien times when hat makers used to use mercury to stiffen card board for top hats (the kind snobby people wear) the exssesive expossure to mercury fumes and the handling of the stuff had severe halucinigenic side affects which were permenent hence the phrase mad as a hatter so i can only suppose that you have come into contact with mercury or some other kind of mind altering drugs either way hope you enjoy: )

You don't have to WEAR a hat to be a mad hatter, you just have to make hats. Or play with Mercury.

Hatters used to use mecury in the making of hats and prolonged mercury exposure can cause "madness." "Mad as a hatter" implies that you're similarly mad. It's just a colloqualism.

Because you have been exposed to poisonous levels of mercury, the stuff they used to make the hats stiff in the old days.
You are not really "mad" but rather mentally unstable due to the mercury. Seek help, or not, I don't care, just stay off the roads.

YOUR NOT MAD ! Life has taught you not to ware a hat !
BUT THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE AROUND WHERE I LIVE THAT DO WHERE HATS. COME TO THINK OF IT, PEOPLE ALL OVER THE WORLD STICK BASEBALL CAPS ON THIER HEADS.

My eldest son Ben even collects bloody hats....
