Like above, "planetos" means "wanderer".

If you were to follow a star's path through the year, you would find that it has a predictable path, a circle through the sky each night, with that circle changing slowly each day, and coming back to the same spot in one year.

Planets don't behave that way - as they move quite a bit relative to the earth, moon and sun. Looking every day, they seem to move through the stars, then turning around and moving the other way. They "wander" through the sky.

Planet means "wanderer", and was used to describe those stars that change positions in the sky, therefore "wandering".
