I was about 10 years old and remember listening to the race on Sunday on my transistor radio. I loved it because it was about Ford vs. Chevy vs. Plymouth, the exact same car we drove. And almost all the drivers lived in the Carolinas. And why is it more stupid than 22 guys pounding each other over a ball on a 100-yard field or chasing each other 90 feet for a ball or hitting a little white ball with a stick? As to the gas usage, check your stats. The average jetliner, used to haul 16 NFL teams, burns 15,000 gallons of fuel for a cross-country trip, and that's for only 1 team. If all 43 cars in a race ran all 500 miles, they would burn less than 5500 gallons. To each his own.

Because NASCAR is a rough-and-tumble sport. Miss the entry to a turn, sideswipe the wall...no problem, just pit and have the crew bang out the dents, new tires, more fuel and your back on the track.
NASCAR uses engine technology that is at least 25 to 30 years old. No modern tech bells or whistles (no million-dollar cars either). The only thing that has changed that much is the aero package, the tires and the safety devices. Everything else is pretty much as it was two to three decades ago.
IRL, CHAMP and F1 all use the latest hi-tech gadgets and the latest engine technolgy (plenty of million-dollar cars here). In my opinion IRL, CHAMP and F1 are nothing but go-karts on steroids.
When was the last time you heard someone climb out of the winning Nextel Cup car and start prattling away in a foreign accent?
NASCAR is a truly American-generated sport!

I was curious about auto racing when I was about 14, worked at a gas station part time (I survived, can't do it in this day and age). Rode my bike two miles to the Fairgrounds in Detroit (Believe it or not, without a helmet, I survived), snuck through a hole in the fence and watched a stockcar race on a one mile track on dirt. I was hooked. My dad didn't even bother to change the oil in his car.
Used to travel all over the USA to watch NASCAR. They have dumbed it down, big bucks now. They have molded the drivers and cars into cookie cutter sameness. Have lost much interest, have been following drag racing 'cause I drag raced for 25 years.

I am NOT a NASCAR fan. It's NOT interesting in the least. I've tried watching it, but I just don't see why people are so facinated about watching cars go around a track for 6 hours. What is the reason you love it so much. I am just curious.

I love all auto racing, but NASCAR markets the personalities of its drivers better than most other sports, let alone racing series. I actually prefer road course racing and used to race myself. I used to think NASCAR driver's were unskilled (turn left for three hours, ohhh) until I raced and realized the amount of concetration it takes! My wife also got it into, originally because there was a Cartoon Network car thast had Scooby Doo on it, but then she decided to follow Dale Jarret, because the guy in the other car 'wasn't very good, and DJ supports breast cancer research."
Ever since then, we've both followed the series.

I have the need for speed. It's a great adrenaline rush after work.
Note to the environmentalists--NASCAR uses methanol, not gasoline. All the people who think will never work, IT'S WORKING!!

I think first of all you have to love cars, racing and speed, on top of all the danger of high speed racing, the crashes, racing strategies, racing gear and the environment in which everything takes place.
