To answer your question - people who are "racist" are afraid of losing the things they value and/or afraid of being kept from achieving the things they value - e.g., culture, status, economic security, resources, etc.
And now for my soap box.....
The label "racist" depends on how you define racism. Sociologists debate over this definition. Some believe that racism is the bias perceptions of other races. The implication of this simplified definition of racism is that everyone is a racist because everyone has bias opinions about other races - even our subtle perceptions that we don't normally think about and that aren't necessarily offensive (e.g., like who we are attracted to). Others believe that defining racism goes beyond just bias perceptions. They believe that racism is the power (including the power obtained by virtue of privilege associated with their own race) to oppress individuals or groups of a different race. The implication of this definition is that only the people who have the power to oppress people of other races can be labeled a "racist".
To ask, "Why are most white people racist," is begging the question - are most white people racist? Under the first definition, yes, as are most non-white people. Under the second definition, it's questionable at best.

i dont think they are, and if you think they are then it isnt most white people, Blacks are prejudiced against whites in north america, asians dont like others indians have a deep caste system, as well as aficans and their tribes, jews have racism from the white top dog jews to the black ethopian jews.
Point is basically, if you happen to be of a race that another race doesnt like, your perception of that race is that they are more racist then any other. Sad but true.
I will add one more thing, being racist is not what some people think it is. Seeing the differences between different races is not racist, even joking about them is not racist. Racism is a serious term that should be applied to the true form, not watered down on some individual who tell a race orientated joke.
I am half Iraqi Half scottish, i grew up with a half afican half english brother and am married to an asian. We can all be different, we just have to learn to appreciate the differences.

I suppose for the same reasons blacks, hispanics and orientals are racist. I have never met one person that in one way or another was not even a little racist, even when they were not meaning to be & claimed they hate racism. It is a horrible human trait. We humans as a species have a lot to learn.
Even the wording of your question could be judged as racist because you singled out white people.

Really simple, because most people of every race are racist. White ones just get the most attention. Besides deliberate racism, everyone has subconscious racism, usually against only a few other races. It is due to being raised in an environment with little diversity.

You probably don't even see anything wrong with the statement you made, but there is. If I asked why most black people are morons you'd probably scream like a raped ape, but I'm just using your blanket assumptions against you. To assume that most white people are racist is to be predjudiced yourself.....And we've all heard the argument that black people can't be racist....bulls*&t. So why are most PEOPLE racist?????? Because they all want to think they're special and just a little bit better than everyone else.

You are wrong by saying MOST which in turn makes you sound racist. Your choice of words may be offending them. SOME white people are racist because they were treated bad but mostly because they are low life ignorant idiots.

Why are most people racists against some sort of race??? I think it is in people's nature to be drawn to what is similar and familiar to them. I think it is also natural to band together with people who are similar, against someone who is the "other".
Now that we're talking about white people though... personally I think Asian people are the most racist ones of them all. Seriously.

if you are referring to white people in America, I would say it is because there was been such a misrepresentation of other races in this country by the media, history books, and this society in general from its birth that many white people are taught to be racist from a young age and do not even realize.
And let's be honest, the MAJORITY of racist acts against an entire race of people (not on an individual level)in this country hae been committed by white people...SLAVERY! Four hundred years of forced servantiude is not carried out if people of ALL RACES are standing up against it...OBVIOUSLY, not too many whites were (eventually that number changed, but AFTER 400 YEARS!)...And even AFTER slavery ended whites continues to exhibit very racist behavior, excluding blacks from participating in government, not allowing blacks to eat at the same resturants, use the same restrooms, ride in the front of a PUBLIC form of transportation, or ven attend the same schools and recieve the same racist education! This FORCED blacks do to many things on their own and for themselves, such as begin HISTORICALLY BLACK colleges since they could not attend the WHITE ONLY colleges and UNIVERSITIES--interesting enough that whites are allowed to enroll in these schools today yet many claim blacks are racist because of their mere existence..The illegal imprisoning of Japanese CITIZENS during WWII, the mistreatment of our Mexican neighbrs (we have and have always maintained an open border policy with Canada, however, not the same with Mexico), The Trail of Tears, not to mention "Manifest Destiny," also known as "The White Man's Burden." Even the fact that many whites live in secluded, white only or predominately white neighborhoods desensitizes them from the normal, every day existence and habits of other races and cultures. Many times those same white people assume that THEIR everyday activities are "the norm," and anything outside of that would be considered "abnormal," hence even the existence of darker colored skin would be seen as "abnormal." Again, many people do this and do not even realize it. I do not feel most white people are racist, yet a vast majority are quite ignorant of their "innocent" racist ways.....Again, I am simply ASSUMING that your question is correct, though I do not feel most white people are racist,; however, and overwhelming amount of whites exhibit racist behavior and many of those are not even aware of it.
Globally, well, I find that every race has carried out some rather harsh things against each other. In the long run, you do see that white people have been at the forefront of some of the most catastrophic (the holocaust, slavery, apartheid, invasions of India, the West Indies, the continent of Afrika and Australia, etc.)

I'm not white. But, I'm curious as to what proof you have that MOST white people are racist. Do you have any evidence to back up your question that is not anecdotal? I've had SOME bad experiences with whites and non-whites that is why I question what you ask.
